What Is Junk Silver?

Junk Silver refers to pre-1965 U.S. coins — specifically dimes, quarters, and half-dollars minted before 1965. Despite the name, there is nothing junky about them.

You see, before 1965 the United States Mint produced these coins using 90% pure silver. That means every old dime, quarter, and half-dollar sitting in a jar or a drawer has real, tangible silver value — far beyond its face value.

Because they contain 90% silver, these coins can be accurately valued using the live spot price of silver on any given day. A pre-1965 quarter is not worth 25 cents — it is worth whatever the silver market says it is worth.

How It Works at Picky's

When you pay with junk silver at Picky's Pizza Saloon, we calculate the value of your coins using the current silver spot price at the time of your visit. You get fair market value for your silver — not face value.

To make it easy, we built the Junk Silver Pay app — a free tool right on our website that tells you exactly how many coins you need to cover your bill.

Try it here: pickyspizzasaloon.com/junk-silver-pay

Just enter your bill total and the app shows you the exact coin combinations — dimes only, quarters only, halves only, or a mix — using live silver prices updated every 5 minutes.

The Key Numbers You Need to Know

The Silver Factor: 0.715

A brand-new $1 face value of 90% silver coins contains exactly 0.7234 troy ounces of pure silver. However, the industry standard uses 0.715 to account for normal wear and tear from years of circulation. This is the number dealers, collectors, and calculators — including our Junk Silver Pay app — use to determine the silver content of circulated coins.

So the base formula looks like this:

Coin Value = Spot Price × 0.715 × Face Value

For example, if silver is at $30 per troy ounce:

$30 × 0.715 = $21.45 per $1 face value

That means a pre-1965 quarter (25¢ face value) would be worth about $5.36 in silver — not 25 cents.

The Dealer Premium

Dealers rarely sell junk silver at the base multiplier. They add a premium to cover profit, handling, and storage costs.

For example, if silver is at $25 per troy ounce:

  • The base multiplier is $25 × 0.715 = $17.875 per $1 face value
  • A dealer might quote you a multiplier of $20, meaning you pay $20 for every $1 in face value

That $2.125 difference is the dealer's premium. When buying silver, always compare the quoted multiplier against the base multiplier to understand what premium you are paying.

At Picky's, we apply a modest 5% premium over the base multiplier — well below what most dealers charge, and still a fair deal for spending your real silver on real food.

Let the App Do the Work

Instead of doing these calculations yourself, the Junk Silver Pay App handles everything for you.

Simply enter the total bill amount in US dollars for anything you are buying. The app will tell you exactly how many coins — and which ones — you need to cover the bill. It will even show you how much change you are due back in US dollars.

Finally, a simple way to do business like we did in the Old West.
